PROGRAMS
One can build a stronger connection with nature and the picturesque when taking the time to view these things through an artistic lens.
Seeking out these special places depicted in Picturesque America over 140 years ago is certainly a grand adventure and an intriguing mystery to solve. But it is the history between then and now that teaches us and will help us make better decisions now for the future of these amazing places. We have learned so much and have inspired others along the way, just as we have been inspired by the writers and artists who came before us.
We are creating programs with the overall goal of bringing awareness to America’s picturesque places and inspiring community action to preserve and protect these treasures for public enjoyment.
COMMUNITY CONSERVATION
Program includes:
• Researching current conservation state of sites from the book
• Identifying new spaces that need awareness and conservation
• Determining funds needed and developing fundraising programs
• Getting local Artist and Historian involvement
• Publicizing conservation needs and concerns
• Establishing markers, signs, and brochures for tourism
• Creating volunteer programs
EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS
We tailor our educational programs to your school curriculum and based on your geographic area. We also strive to involve both youth and adult presenters and have peer-based involvement to better inspire and connect with the audience.
Program typically includes:
• The story of the publication of the Picturesque America serials and their influence on conservation
• The printing technology/process of the 19th century
• History of journalism
• Artistic technique
• Creative writing
• Architectural and natural history
• Actions that can be taken today for the conservation of natural places
YOUTH PROGRAMS
Art Inspired by Nature
This program is designed to offer opportunities for youth to be outside and away from the distractions of the electronic lifestyle – to experience the wonders of our natural world.
Guided group hikes or river trips to a variety of scenic areas will be offered – to give individuals time to be in the moment and let the natural surroundings speak to them through discovery and creativity. Whether it’s through writing, drawing, or photography, we encourage youth to capture the experience, be inspired, and find a special connection with the natural world that will last a lifetime.
Program includes:
• Guided group hikes or river treks to various PA locations
• Photography and landscape drawing instruction
• Art and writing materials/supplies
• Copies of PA illustrations to locate
• Leave-no-trace training
• Plant and wildlife identification
* Long-term camping excursions also available
FAMILY PROGRAMS
A PAPA Family Adventure:
We want to encourage families to take their own adventure retracing the steps of the artists and writers of Picturesque America, just as we have.
How exciting it is to be able to stand or sit in the same locations as the artists from 140 years ago and to see how the landscape they depicted has changed or remained unchanged!
Families will be responsible for all transportation, accommodations, meals, and any other items needed for travel.
Program includes:
• Detailed travel and hiking maps for selected destination(s)
• A copy of the travel log with landscape illustrations to locate
• Travel advisories (if needed)
• Recommended accommodations
• Guide and itinerary
• Pre-trip adventure training
WHAT CAN ONE PERSON DO?
Is there a natural space that is special to you to which you would like to give special recognition?
Create and donate an art piece that conveys what this place means to you. It can be any art form you choose, whether it is visual art, written word, videography, photography, dance… We will publicize your creative and inspirational piece online to help raise funds for local conservation or preservation projects that will recognize and protect this special place.
