During the Preservation Through Art exhibition, the installation entitled “Footsteps & Brushstrokes” will be upstairs in the Wedge at Foundation and will display artwork and photos from the adventure on the Buncombe Turnpike that made this exhibition possible. Artist Mike “Sketch” Wurman and PAPA founder Scott “Doc” Varn embarked on this 80-mile, 2-week trek following in the footsteps and brushstrokes of the original Picturesque America artist Harry Fenn. The original route mostly followed the Drovers road and the famed Buncombe Turnpike of the 1800s. By retracing the steps of the original artist, we were able to find locations featured in the original Picturesque America serials.
Photos of the adventure and the original sketches at each of the 12 vantage points will be on display. They were created in the fashion of the original artist in both charcoal and walnut ink washes. Art shown below was created by Scott Varn and Mike Wurman.
This installation can be viewed anytime that the Wedge at Foundation is open. Visit their website to view hours.
