Medium: Oil, charcoal, pastel
Artist Statement: I’ve always been an artist. Wherever I’ve lived I’ve tried to capture the unique landscape and particular emotion attached to a scene.
Working for the Ringling Brothers Circus and Disney on Ice as a set designer gave me a different perspective on…well, everything. That’s when I moved to North Carolina.
People ask me about my inspiration for painting. I am lucky to live in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, so inspiration is not far from my front door. Whether painting a river, woods, or the majestic mountains themselves, I strive to depict the kind of beauty that either lets you remember your experience, or beckons you to visit.
About the Artist: Born in Merced, California, Mark traveled extensively with his military family. In his youth, he lived in all but a few of the United States and spent his teenage years in Okinawa. After attending Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Florida, he became a frame conservator for the Ringling Museum of Art and later worked as a set designer for the Ringling Brothers Circus and Disney on Ice. That was then. Now “retired” in Weaverville, NC Mark holds classes and workshops at his studio and continues to draw and paint the exquisite, inspiring and ever-changing landscape of Western North Carolina. All of the frames you see here are designed and built by the artist to complement each art piece. Breathe deeply. Beauty surrounds us.
