Preservation Through the Arts
Artist participation is the key to our project. Just as it was with the original Picturesque America in the 1870s, the voice of the artist has helped repeatedly to promote conservation. In the case of the original Picturesque America, it exposed the public to special yet unknown places, which shifted perceptions to a conservation and preservation mindset.
As we revisit and render again each of these vantage points we will find what is needed in places all across America, to make sure these places remain or become protected, or unfortunately show where we have stumbled and lost some of these important landmarks.
For each of the original chapters, we will locate each vantage point and have guided paint-outs to recreate it as it is today. From the artwork created for each chapter, we will have a juried selection to determine which pieces will be used in the newly revised publication. There will also be a Gala and Art Exhibition for artists to display their work, regardless of whether they were selected for publication or not. Funds raised during this event will be given to conservation efforts in the area(s) featured in each chapter.
